Matzen bricks are imported for each project, so the key is ordering early. Here is how ordering works, how long it takes and how many bricks you need.
How many bricks?
For a single skin wall in stretcher bond. Take off window and door openings first. We check every quantity before we quote.
Bricks per m² = 1 ÷ ((length + joint) x (height + joint)). Matzen quotes about 64 per m² for the Danish format.

Lead time
Allow 16 weeks* from a confirmed order to delivery in Melbourne.

Stock
Prolific Stone holds no Matzen stock in Australia. Matzen keeps some lines in stock in Denmark; others are fired for your order. Special shapes are made to drawings.
Delivery
Shipped by container from Europe, cleared through Australian customs, then delivered to your site anywhere in Australia. Delivery is quoted with the order.
Mix as you lay
Matzen bricks vary by design. Draw from several pallets at once so colour spreads evenly across the wall, as Matzen recommends.
Order once
Order the full quantity in one go, with your allowance, so every brick comes from the same production. Topping up later means another import and possible colour difference.
Firm orders
Orders are firm once confirmed. Custom bricks and special shapes cannot be cancelled or returned. Up to 5% breakage in handling is normal and not a defect.
Cleaning the finished wall
- Remove mortar residue with a dry, coarse scouring sponge once the joints are dry enough.
- If acid is needed, use ready mixed masonry acid diluted 1:20, applied diagonally in a single pass. Repeat passes build up acid.
- Acid can cause efflorescence and discolouration. Yellow and manganese containing bricks are the most sensitive, so check the brick suits acid cleaning first.
- Never clean interior brickwork with hydrochloric acid.
The joint changes the wall.
The same brick reads lighter and softer with a pale mortar, and darker and more graphic with a dark one. Ask for samples and try your shortlist against both before you choose.

How many Matzen bricks per square metre?
About 64 Danish format bricks per square metre of single skin wall, as Matzen states. The calculator on this page works it out for your joint size and adds an allowance for cuts and breakage.
How are Matzen bricks delivered?
Bricks travel from Denmark by sea in shipping containers. Prolific Stone clears customs and delivers to your site, anywhere in Australia, with the delivery cost quoted up front.
Should bricks from different pallets be mixed?
Yes. Matzen recommends mixing bricks from several pallets as you lay, so natural colour variation spreads evenly across the wall.
Can I cancel or return an order?
Orders are made or picked for your project and shipped from Denmark, so they are firm once confirmed. Custom bricks and special shapes cannot be cancelled or returned. Confirm your sample and quantities before ordering.
